Hyperpigmentation: Causes And Treatments

by Apr 19, 2022Blog0 comments

We have all heard of hyperpigmentation by now, right? We know that it can be quite annoying because it takes away from having even skin-tone. We also battle the fact that we have to look at dark spots that just won’t seem to go away no matter how many videos you find on TikTok and YouTube. Well, while some home remedies may have went viral, they have not been 100% proven to be effective. But that’s no reason to give up hope, in this blog I’m hoping to help you better understand hyperpigmentation and bring to light some of the possible options for treatment in lightening and possibly reducing its appearance drastically.

Let’s begin with some of the common causes of hyperpigmentation, shall we? One of the main common causes of hyperpigmentation is sun exposure. This is why
I constantly stress the DAILY application of sunscreen! As you expose your skin to the sun, the body produces more melanin to protect the skin from prolonged exposure. Avoiding sun exposure is one of the ways to prevent hyperpigmentation. Also, using an SPF of 30 or more is another way to ensure your skin isn’t frying out there and getting damaged. The sun also darkens already visible hyperpigmentation, so it’s best to do your part in preventing it from happening and/or getting worse.

Another cause of hyperpigmentation is skin inflammation. When the skin experiences cuts, burns, acne, eczema, and other types of skin inflammation, the areas can darken. Even suffering from lupus can bring about hyperpigmentation. The best thing you can do during these times is NOT PICK AT YOUR SKIN!! Do not pick at acne (many are guilty of doing this), do not pick scabs and spots! I know it’s a nuisance to see them there but you’re doing yourself a disservice by picking at them and creating more strain on the skin.

Some other causes of hyperpigmentation may be melasma, reactions to drug use, and medical conditions. Some drugs that have shown to induce hyperpigmentation are anti-malarial drugs and tricyclic antidepressants.

TREATMENTS

– Topical Creams: Topical creams can help lighten hyperpigmentation. Creams containing Azelaic Acid, Corticosteriods, Hydroquinone, Kojic Acid, Retinoids (Tretinoin), and Vitamin C are guaranteed to lighten the darkened areas. However, consistency and a good skincare regimen is required.

– Cosmetic Procedures: Cosmetic procedures can help lighten hyperpigmentation and reduce its appearance drastically. Some treatments such as:

  • Radio Frequency Microneedling
  • Hollywood Carbon Laser Peels/Facials
  • Laser Therapy
  • LED Light Therapy
  • Chemical Peels
  • Microdermabrasion

and many more will dramatically lighten the hyperpigmentation over time with a few treatments. However, before embarking on that journey please consult with a skincare specialist or dermatologist.

There are also a few home remedies floating around the internet but there haven’t been any large-scale studies in humans that have proven them effective. Before trying any home remedies, it is recommended that a patch test be done on a small area to test for any negative reactions. Some natural treatments that MAY reduce hyperpigmentation are:

  • Aloe: Aloesin works by inhibiting the production of melanin of the skin.
  • Licorice: Glabridin (a licorice extract) can have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and skin-lightening effects.
  • Green Tea extracts contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties

So whether you’re looking to give it a try with topicals or cosmetic procedures or even willing to try the viral “natural remedies”, be sure to understand your skin. Do not irritate it more and do not put it at risk to worsen. Do your research and always consult with a skincare professional to help diagnose and point you in the right direction. Also keep in mind that no two people have the same kind of skin and what works for others, may not necessarily work for you.
